Horse riding and animal welfare

A slower ride,
done responsibly.

A sunrise or sunset beach ride can be memorable, but animal welfare must lead every decision. Choose a professional stable, a healthy horse and a route suited to the rider and conditions.

How to choose a responsible ride

Contact an established stable and explain rider height, weight and experience. A responsible team matches the horse, uses correctly fitted tack, provides water and rest, and will change the plan in excessive heat or unsafe beach conditions. Beginners should have a handler or instructor and remain at a controlled pace.

Signs to look for

  • Bright, alert horse with a healthy body condition and no open wounds.
  • Clean, properly fitting saddle and bridle without obvious rubbing.
  • Calm handling and no hitting or forced galloping.
  • Clear rider weight limits, helmets and safety explanation.
  • Shade, drinking water and visible rest periods.

Horse riding versus cidomo

Riding is a leisure activity with one matched rider. A cidomo is traditional working transport used for people and luggage. For either, decline an animal that appears lame, exhausted, injured or overloaded. Gili Eco Trust includes cidomo welfare among its island programmes.

Best route and timing

Early morning is cooler and beaches are quieter. Sunset provides warm light but can be busier. Tide affects the available firm sand, so let the stable choose a safe route. Wear closed shoes and long lightweight trousers, and avoid carrying a loose phone while riding.

Frequently asked

Practical answers.

Can beginners ride on the beach?

Often yes, with a suitable horse, professional supervision and a controlled walking pace.

Should riders wear a helmet?

Yes. Ask the stable for a correctly fitting riding helmet.

Is horse riding available on every island?

Availability changes. It is most visible on Gili Trawangan; confirm current responsible operators before planning around it.

What if a horse looks unwell?

Do not ride or use the carriage. Choose another option and report serious welfare concerns to a local welfare organisation or your accommodation.
