Which side of Gili Trawangan should you choose?
The compact east coast is closest to the harbour, dive schools, night market and the island's busiest restaurants. It is convenient and social, but sound travels at night. The north feels calmer while keeping useful services within cycling distance. The west and southwest are built around sunset, beach clubs and resorts; they suit travellers who prefer space and do not mind cycling across the island.
Best things to do
Start with a three-island snorkelling trip or a guided scuba dive. Certified divers can reach sites around all three islands, while beginners can take a supervised introduction or a full course. On land, cycle the coastal path, walk to the southern hill viewpoint, visit the evening food market and book a sunrise or sunset horse ride with a welfare-conscious stable.
Kayaks, paddleboards, selected surf breaks, yoga classes and conservation activities add variety. The official Indonesia Travel guide also highlights sunrise and sunset viewing, glass-bottom boat trips, cycling, kayaking, paddleboarding and horse riding.
Nightlife without losing the whole island
Gili T has the strongest nightlife of the three islands. The busiest venues cluster around the harbour-side strip, while sunset bars on the west coast begin earlier and feel more relaxed. Weekly schedules change, so ask your accommodation what is happening during your stay. If sleep matters, avoid rooms immediately behind the east-coast nightlife zone.
